Project title in English: Drone pilots as an answer to green youth employability
Project Acronym: FLYOUTH
Project Total Duration: 2022-2024

Decent Jobs for Youth is the global initiative to scale up action and impact on youth employment under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It aims to establish linkages that maximize the effectiveness of investments in youth employment in an environmentally sustainable way. The initiative recognizes the important role of governments, social partners, the UN system, youth and civil society, the private sector, regional institutions, parliamentarians, foundations, academics and the media in promoting decent employment for young people.
Climate change and the youth employment crisis are closely linked. Indeed, they must be tackled together to achieve a just transition to a low-carbon, environmentally and socially sustainable economy that leads to more and better job opportunities. Greening the economy involves investments in technology, energy, buildings, and infrastructure to make them sustainable and will have a significant impact on the world of work, driving job creation and improvements. In particular, it requires the involvement of young women and men as agents of change who are increasingly concerned about environmental issues and recognize the critical role they can play in the green economy. If managed well, green growth can provide an opportunity to meet the needs of young people while conserving the environment and making economies more resilient to climate change. Aligned with these needs, we have conceived our project to contribute to youth employability with a focus on the green economy, specifically by boosting drones in the environmental sector to modernize the sector and contribute to its sustainability.
The challenge now is to use all technologies to make infrastructures and means of production operationally, environmentally, and energetically efficient in order to make them sustainable, and we now have a great opportunity in this respect through drone technology and its environmental application.
Objectives:
Drones are already starting to be used in most sectors for different purposes, and people are still unaware of this. It is a market that is constantly evolving, but some of the many job opportunities that this profession offers today are environmental jobs. And that’s why with this project we want to promote the digitalization of the environmental sector through the use of drones, and as a professional opportunity for young people.
Other specific objectives:
– To promote an understanding about the relation between digitalization and environmental challenges.
– To raise young people’s awareness of the importance of environmental protection.
– To provide young people with the necessary skills and methodologies to combat environmental challenges.
– To improve the drone skills of young people so that they can become involved in the digitization of the environmental sector.
– To provide young people with updated skills to get green employment.
Target group:
The target group of our project is all those young people (18-25) who are interested in protecting the environment or at least minimizing its effects on it as much as possible, from green and sustainable jobs, which contribute to the modernization of the sector and the circular economy. Because our society is increasingly concerned with minimizing our footprint and negative impact on the environment. This has finally made society realize the need for a transition to a green and circular economy, and this translates into job opportunities revolving around environmental studies and careers and courses in green jobs such as drones. The number of job vacancies for drone pilots has increased exponentially worldwide, especially in their environmental applications. So what promised to be the breakthrough profession has turned out to be much better, and no one would imagine the number of applications that RPAS have today. Without a doubt, drone pilots are one of the most fashionable and promising professions today. Job offers for drone pilots are already very common in the different job portals.

“One of the activities that I will always remember of the ‘Debate for understanding’ course is the Air Balloon Activity that I organised together with two other participants. In this simulation, the participants are in an air balloon which is too heavy and only a few of the participants can stay in the balloon. The decision who will stay in the balloon and who has to go was made on basis of one-minute pitches given by the participants in which they answer the question ‘why do I deserve to be saved?’. The extra element was that the participants are not themselves, but represent a celebrity, fictional person or an object.”
